The first-session learning review is part of your tutoring hours. It gives the work a purposeful starting point.

  • A starting review and personal goalsRecent schoolwork, a short independent task and a conversation about what your learner wants to achieve.
  • Purposeful lessons and selected materialsOne-to-one instruction, relevant reading and writing tasks, and specific feedback during sessions.
  • Practice that builds independenceOpportunities to apply a strategy, revise a response and try a new task with less guidance.
  • Progress conversations with parentsClear goals at the start, brief updates at agreed review points and a summary of next steps as the block ends.

What does the learning evaluation look like?

A closer look at strong work reveals where it can become more accomplished.

  1. 01

    Understand the starting point

Review a recent assignment and a short reading or writing task. Notice how the student interprets a question, selects evidence and explains an idea.

  2. 02

    Choose the next challenge

Agree on one or two goals, such as deeper analysis, a clearer argument or a more effective revision process.

  3. 03

    Look for independent progress

Compare later work with the starting sample and try a fresh task. Discuss what is stronger, what transfers and what to practise next.

Good to know

A few questions
from families.

What if my child is already doing well?

That is a great starting point. KM Learning is designed for students who want to build on strong foundations and achieve more: a more nuanced interpretation, a more convincing essay, greater confidence with demanding work or more independence. We begin with what your child already does well and find a worthwhile next challenge.

What is included in a block of tutoring hours?

Every block includes one-to-one teaching with Kristi-Mari, a starting learning review, personal goals, selected learning materials, practice and feedback during sessions. We also agree on parent review points and discuss next steps as the block ends. The 10-, 20- and 50-hour options offer different amounts of time and continuity, with the same individual approach.

How do you evaluate my child’s learning?

During the first tutoring session, we look at recent schoolwork and a short independent reading or writing task. We consider understanding, evidence, explanation, organization and how much guidance the student needs. Together, we choose one or two stretch goals. This is an instructional review to guide tutoring. It does not assign a formal diagnosis or an official school grade.

How will I know my child is making progress?

We agree on goals and review points at the start. Updates describe what your learner is working on, what their writing or discussion shows and what comes next. Comparing early work with later independent work helps make progress visible. School feedback and marks can add context, alongside the quality of the thinking and the student's growing independence.

What happens between sessions?

When useful, Kristi-Mari suggests a manageable reading, writing or reflection task to practise the current goal. We agree on what fits alongside school commitments. Detailed teaching, marking and revision take place within booked tutoring time. Any additional work is discussed in advance.

Who is the tutoring for?

Students in Grades 6–12 seeking deeper reading comprehension, stronger writing and more accomplished work in English Language Arts and Social Studies. Lessons follow the student’s readiness, interests and goals, with any skills that need strengthening addressed along the way.

Where do sessions take place?

Sessions are available in a private, home-based learning studio in Southwest Calgary or online. We’ll discuss the format that fits your family during the consultation. Studio location details are shared when arranging your sessions. An in-person session can be rescheduled to an online format in cases of bad weather, traffic, illness, travel or other circumstances. Twenty-four hours’ advance notice of a session change is appreciated.

What does my child need to bring to each session?

Students should bring any relevant schoolwork they would like to address. This may include homework, assignments, rubrics, subject content and resources, notes, teacher feedback, returned tests and projects. The more context I have, the more closely I can tailor each session to your child’s needs. When applicable, your child should also bring a laptop to access subject content hosted online and a tutoring notebook to record feedback from each session and goals to work on between sessions.

What happens during the free consultation?

We meet for 30 minutes, either virtually or in person at the learning studio, to talk about your child’s strengths, interests and ambitions. Based on the initial information you share about your learner, I may recommend the format that will make the consultation most useful. You can ask questions, discuss the right focus and get to know Kristi-Mari. It is a conversation about fit and next steps. The work-sample evaluation takes place in the first tutoring session if you choose to continue.

How do the blocks of hours work?

Choose 10, 20 or 50 tutoring hours after the consultation. We agree on session length, frequency and review points before beginning. A focused block may suit one goal. A longer block gives more room for sustained practice and new challenges. Session scheduling and arrangements for changes are discussed before you commit.
